The Magus Circle Spell Sigils Lookup
Named spells, HUD slots, and crude recognition. Shapes are learned in-game — this page does not invent glyphs.
Every combat decision in The Magus Circle starts with a stroke. You do not press 1 to fire Ice Spear. You draw the sigil the HUD taught you, the recognizer accepts a crude version of that shape, and the spell in that slot answers. This page is a lookup table for the named spells players actually meet, plus notes on HUD slots and circle gestures. It is not a grimoire of unofficial doodles. If a shape is not shown in-game, it is not printed here.
For motion, timing, and how to recover from a failed stroke, use How to Draw Spells. For whether a spell is worth a level-up, use the spell tier list and the parent tier list. This tool only answers “what is this name, and how does the game expect me to trigger it?”
Circle gestures versus spell sigils
Two different “circles” confuse new players.
- The Magus Circle is the field you hold against the Tide: a defensive play space that can expand as a run mechanic. Gestures that grow or hold that field are circle-as-arena, not a named projectile.
- Spell sigils are the strokes that fill HUD spell slots. Those slots populate as you pick spells from chests and level-ups. Drawing the matching sigil casts that slot. Drawing a pretty ring in the empty air does not fire meteor swarm just because the game is named after a circle.
Practice the HUD prompt. Ignore fan diagrams that add extra points, runes, or alchemical seals the demo never taught.
Crude recognition
By Witchlight’s pitch is explicit: you do not need to be an artist. Even crudely drawn sigils still hold magic. The recognizer is intentionally forgiving. That does not mean every scribble maps to every spell.
What we will say:
- The game teaches each shape in its own UI. Copy that, not a wiki artist.
- Players have reported that some spells still fire from simplified strokes (a shallow angle for lightning-family casts, a hasty line for Ice Spear, a bump for a wave). Those are player observations, not official glyph sheets.
- Meteor-family casts are often described as picky. If the HUD rejects you, redraw the taught shape instead of inventing a comet cartoon.
- Magic missile is often described as wanting clearer corners than a loop. Again: learn it in-game, then simplify only as far as the recognizer allows.
A mouse is enough. A tablet is optional. See system requirements if you were about to buy hardware, and Getting Started if you have not finished the tutorial prompts.
Named spell lookup
These names showed up in the Next Fest slice and in public combat footage. Do not treat this table as a complete full-game list. The studio’s Korea recap talked about growing unique spells from about twelve toward twenty, and the Next Fest thank-you promised more spells still. When a new name appears in a build, it will earn a row. Until then, no invented hexes.
| Name | What it does in a run | Drawing note |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Spear | Summons ice spears that hunt strong monsters and damage what they pass through. A common early pickup. | Taught in-game. Players report crude lines or T-like follow-through can still fire. Copy the HUD first. |
| Riptide / Quazar / Wattatsumi | Water-family tools. Riptide is the torrent you aim: damage plus knockback in a chosen direction. Quazar and Wattatsumi sit in the same tide vocabulary as upgrades or sibling casts. | Direction matters. Draw the taught water sigil, then pick the heading. Do not invent a wave glyph from mythology charts. |
| Meteor swarm | Meteors strike around you, heavy hits, burning monsters. High panic value when the circle is crowded. | Often called specific by players. If it fails, slow down and redraw the in-game shape. No comet doodles. |
| Chain lightning | Lightning hits the nearest monster, then jumps. Excellent when packs clump on the ring. | Crude recognition applies. Community notes mention very simple angle strokes. Still learn the official prompt before you min-max the scribble. |
| Magic missile | Classic multi-bolt. Reliable filler that upgrades into shatter and crit tricks. | Players say corners help reliability more than a fast loop. Match the HUD corners. |
| Spellblade | Melee-magic hybrid for people who want the circle to cut as well as bombard. | Shape is taught when the slot unlocks. This wiki will not draw a fake sword-rune. |
Upgrade text you see on level-up — Ice Spear splitting into knives, Riptide becoming a beam, missiles refracting — belongs on the upgrade rankings, not in this drawing table. Cast the base sigil first. The upgrade rides along.
HUD slots in practice
A typical combat second looks like this:
- Glance at the slot you actually need (gap-close versus pack-clear versus boss burn).
- Draw that sigil once, clean enough for the recognizer.
- Move. The Tide does not pause for calligraphy.
- If the slot fizzles, do not mash three other shapes. Redraw the one you meant.
Failed recognition is usually haste, not a secret third glyph. How to Play covers positioning while you draw. How to Beat Bosses covers saving a reliable sigil for telegraphs instead of improvising a new art style mid-slam.
How this tool fits the rest of the wiki
- Learning the stroke: How to Draw Spells.
- Learning the run: How to Play, Getting Started, demo notes.
- Learning the names of mages who hold these slots: players, Milk, Rum, Matcha.
- Learning which spell to pick: spell tier list, character rankings.
- Learning when the full game is listed: release date (Steam lists 24 September 2026), Next Fest for the demo that opened on 23 February 2026.
- Prep: Tools Hub, wishlist checklist, Updates, Links.
If a creator posts a “complete sigil alphabet” with twenty unpublished runes, close it. The honest alphabet is the one on your HUD. Draw that. Rank it later. The Tide grades results, not line weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where do I learn the actual shapes?
In-game. The HUD teaches each sigil when the spell enters a slot. This page names spells and describes recognition; it does not publish unofficial glyph art.
Do messy drawings still cast?
Yes. Crude recognition is a design goal. Messy is not random: meteor-family casts and magic missile still want something closer to the taught shape than a scribble.
Is drawing a circle the Ice Spear sigil?
No. The Magus Circle is the defensive field. Spell sigils are separate HUD strokes. A ring in empty space is not a substitute for the Ice Spear prompt.
Mouse or tablet for sigils?
Mouse works. Tablet is optional. Practice on How to Draw Spells rather than shopping for hardware.
Which spells are in this lookup?
Ice Spear, the Riptide / Quazar / Wattatsumi water family, meteor swarm, chain lightning, magic missile, and Spellblade. The list grows when a build shows a new name, not before.
Where should I rank these spells?
On the spell tier list, with character and upgrade pages for the rest of a single-player build. This tool is a drawing reference, not an S-tier argument.
