How to Beat The Magus Circle Bosses
Leviathans, drawing while you kite, Ice Spear versus Riptide, and the extract-or-continue choice.
A Magus Circle boss is a Leviathan of that world, not a separate dungeon with a loading screen. The Tide does not politely stop so you can draw a perfect meteor. You keep moving, you keep spending mana, and you either create space or you get clipped mid-stroke. This page is the fight. If you still miss basic chevrons, stop and use how to draw spells. If you do not know why you are in the World of Mirna, back up to how to play.
The game is single-player. Nobody is coming to stun the boss for you. Demo HUD still shows potions on the left and spell slots on the right while the Leviathan is on screen. Lose those numbers and you are already losing the fight.
When the first Leviathan arrives
One 30-minute Next Fest recording met the first boss around the 13-minute mark. Other players extracted in the 10–15 minute window after a kill. Treat 13 minutes as a landmark from that video, not a stopwatch you must hit. If your timer is at eight minutes and the pack is already elite-dense, you may be on a harsher challenge leftover from a previous victory. If your timer is at sixteen and nothing huge has appeared, keep kiting; the Leviathan is late, not cancelled.
World of Mirna is the named slice from demo talk. Each world has a Leviathan. The full game pitch includes three maps with procedural generation, so later bosses should not be clones of the first even if the drawing rules stay the same. Track map additions on Updates and Next Fest rather than assuming the 0.4.6 screenshot is final.
Positioning while the cursor is busy
The unique failure of this game is dying because both hands were drawing. Movement has to be a habit that survives a sigil.
- Start the stroke only when you already have a walk direction. Do not plant your feet, draw, then notice the hitbox.
- Prefer short shapes you can finish on the move. A crude Ice Spear line that lands is better than a ornate meteor that does not.
- Use knockback as a drawing window. That is Riptide’s job.
- Near-misses are not just style. Milk converts a near miss into speed and mana through Nimble, then can pop Bunny Form for 3 seconds of +25% move speed and -50% size on a 25-second cooldown. That shrink is a boss tool. Use it to finish a stroke, not to pose.
- Rum wants to be close. Spellblade, crits, and a parry upgrade mean the Leviathan fight is a melee argument. Prestige names Drenal, Ido, and Lonlight Chakras showed in an official short; they do not remove the need to complete a circle. If you cannot parry and draw, pick Milk for the first Leviathan.
Matcha and the rest of the players roster change the feel of the window you have to draw. They do not create a second player. Check the character tier list after you have died to the same boss twice, not before you have seen it.
Ice Spear versus Riptide
These two showed up constantly in playthroughs for a reason.
Ice Spear is the high-damage default. Demo text described two ice spears that periodically attack the strongest monsters and damage what they pass through. That is a Leviathan magnet: the boss is usually the strongest thing on the field, so Spear wants to be your primary while the big target is up. Upgrades that split spears or add frost effects are greedy in a good way if you can still draw the base line. If your Spear accuracy is poor, you do not have a boss build. You have a hope.
Riptide is the push. You choose a direction, the water shoves, and you buy the second you need to start Ice Spear. Later upgrades named in footage include a Quazar beam and a Wattatsumi sea dragon. Those are power spikes, not a reason to drop the shove. Against a Leviathan that sits on you, a beam that does not move the body is a worse first pick than a crude wave that does.
Meteor swarm looks like a boss answer because it hits areas. Demo players also called the shape picky. A picky shape during a Leviathan is how you stand still. Chain lightning and magic missile can help clear the adds that block your walking lane. Spellblade is Rum’s melee answer. Rank the full set on the spell tier list. During the actual fight, cast the two you can finish.
Potions are the left-side panic button. Do not draw through a drink. Glance left, sip, then shove.
When to kite, when to stand your ground
Kite when:
- Your primary sigil is Ice Spear or any line that does not need you in melee.
- Bunny Form is available and the boss just committed to a lunge.
- Adds have sealed the room and you need Riptide to open a corridor.
- You are on Milk and Nimble has just paid you for a near miss; spend that speed, do not donate it back.
Stand your ground when:
- You are Rum with a parry ready and the boss telegraphed a hit you can actually answer.
- Riptide just created a hole and walking away would waste it.
- You have a Duration tarot (The Emperor’s +10% Duration at T1 showed on a screenshot) and the spears are already flying; walking into a wall is worse than strafing in place.
Do not stand still to admire circle expansion. Playthroughs talk about the circle growing with upgrades. The Leviathan does not care.
After the kill: teleport or continue
Killing the Leviathan is not automatically the end of the Tide. You can teleport to the Magus Mansion or keep running. First-hour players should teleport. Currency buys tarot (Priestess and Hierophant for +0.5 Mana Regen, Empress for speed or mana efficiency, Magus for Bunny Form) and progress toward unlocks such as Anchan at 25 currency. That shopping trip is documented on how to play.
Continue only if both sigils are still landing, potions remain, and you already know the next challenge you want after a victory. There are over 10 unique challenges. Picking a harsher one because you got lucky on Spear lines is how the following Leviathan teaches humility.
If you died, walk the mansion anyway. Tea, familiars, Odds the bartender-bookie, then a shorter run aimed at the same boss. The Guides Hub and Getting Started exist if the fight exposed a hole in the basics. Demo footage is useful to rewatch the 13-minute landmark. Tools will not draw the sigil for you. Links will not either. The Leviathan yields when the stroke finishes on the move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When does the first Magus Circle boss appear?
One 30-minute demo recording met a Leviathan around 13 minutes in the World of Mirna. Other runs extracted in a 10–15 minute window. Loop context is on how to play.
Should I use Ice Spear or Riptide on Leviathans?
Ice Spear for damage on the strongest target. Riptide to shove and create a drawing window. Practice both on how to draw spells and compare them on the spell tier list.
How do I draw without getting hit?
Should I extract after the Leviathan?
Yes on early runs. Teleport, buy tarot or tea, then come back. Continuing is for when both sigils still land. The mansion loop is on how to play.
Does every world have a Leviathan?
Demo talk frames a Leviathan per world, starting with the World of Mirna. Three maps with procedural generation are the full-game pitch. Calendar: release date.
