The Magus Circle How Spellcasters Use Melee
Drawing is the combat verb. Spellblade, Ice Spear, Riptide, and Milk near-misses — not a hotbar Magus.
The Magus Circle has an official By Witchlight short titled How do spellcasters use melee? That question is this page. The answer is not a hotbar. The answer is not a tabletop Magus class from another ruleset. You draw. If the Tide is already in your ribs, you are still drawing. Close range is a spacing and timing problem, not a second weapon set you swing while a spell rides along.
Steam lists the full game for 24 September 2026. The demo opened on 23 February 2026. Kit numbers and prestige names below are demo-era and designer-talk. If an in-game card disagrees, the card wins.
You are not a hotbar wizard
Most survivor-likes fire while you walk. The Magus Circle does the opposite. The cursor is the cast. There is no 1-2-3 spell row you tap while the character auto-swings a staff. The studio line is blunt: you do not need to be an artist, and even crudely drawn sigils still hold magic. Crude still has to finish. Standing still to make a prettier circle is how a melee-range pack eats you.
If a search result sent you here because the word Magus sits next to melee in a different game, stop. This wiki will not import Spellstrike, spell combat, or an arcane pool. Those belong to another product. In The Magus Circle the combat verb is drawing. Melee is what happens when you keep drawing while monsters occupy the same pixels you do.
HUD still matters at that range. Potions sit on the left. Spell slots sit on the right. XP bonus, timer, kill count, and level sit in the chrome. Glance after a shove, not mid-stroke. Version labels such as 0.4.6 are demo screenshots, not a launch freeze.
Rum’s Spellblade is the published melee-adjacent kit
The only mage with a public close-range signature is Rum. Spellblade is his kit. A designer short described homing blades with a crit identity. Published points, and only those:
- One Spellblade is summoned for each mana spent. You can trickle blades or spend into a wall.
- The line is designed around crit damage.
- An upgrade can keep blades from shattering on crit.
- There is a parry upgrade on the Spellblade line.
- Three prestige names: Drenal (a greatsword dump of combined blade damage), Ido (a quick slash to nearby enemies), Lonlight Chakras (blades that do not break).
That is the melee-adjacent fantasy the studio actually published. Blades that orbit and home. A parry if the upgrade appears. Prestige names you can look for in a run. It is not a sword you swing on a separate attack button while a touch spell delivers through the steel. If those prestige names are missing from a given build, the festival slice simply did not ship them. Check the in-run book.
Rum wants you closer than Milk. Closer means the cursor is busy in a smaller safe pocket. Start the sigil earlier than you think. Spend mana on purpose: a panic half-cast is a weak wall of blades. There is no Milk refund on this kit unless a card says so. Practice the parry on a trash ring, not on the first Leviathan. Fight notes live on how to beat bosses.
Do not invent a fourth prestige. Do not paste a dual-wield staff rotation onto Rum because another wiki used the word Magus.
Ice Spear is poke. Riptide is push.
You do not need Rum to fight at arm’s length. Two common Tide spells already describe an aggressive close game and a safety close game. Rankings sit on the spell tier list. During a real Tide, cast the two you can finish.
Ice Spear is the poke. Demo talk described spears that hunt the strongest monsters and damage what they pass through. That is a Leviathan magnet and a dense-pack poker. It wants you to keep drawing instead of hiding. If your line collapses when a hitbox touches you, Ice Spear will look worse than a VOD promised. Upgrades that split spears or add frost are greedy in a good way only if the base line still lands.
Riptide is the push. You pick a direction, water shoves, and you buy the second you need to start the next circle. Later branches named in footage include a Quazar beam and a Wattatsumi sea dragon. Those are power spikes. The job of the base wave is still safety: create space, then draw. Against a body sitting on your shoes, a shove that moves the pack beats a beam that does not.
Meteor swarm looks like a melee-range answer because it hits an area. Demo players also called the shape picky. A picky shape at close range is a statue. Chain lightning and magic missile can clear the adds that seal your walking lane. Spellblade remains Rum’s signature, not a chest you should expect on every mage.
Milk is how you survive while drawing in close
Near-miss movement on Milk is the honest close-range survival kit for people who are not Rum. Nimble pays a burst of speed and mana when she closely evades a monster. That is not a parry. It is a tax you collect by walking a hitbox. The payment is the two resources a drawing mage needs: space and mana.
Bunny Form is the panic pocket: 3 seconds, +25% move speed, 50% smaller, 25-second cooldown. Use it to finish a sigil, not to pose. Half size is fewer pixels for the Tide to clip. Combine it with Nimble and you can farm mana in a crowd that would flatten a planted Rum.
If you never see the speed burst, you are either too far (safe, dry) or too late (hit). Practice that distance in how to draw spells. Crude lines still count. Milk exists so you can be crude while moving.
Matcha and the rest of the mages hub change how the drawing window feels. They do not add a second pair of hands. Coffee, Chicha, and Anchan stay on that hub until the studio prints combat text at Milk or Rum depth.
A tablet is optional
A drawing tablet is comfort, not a melee requirement. Plenty of Next Fest players used a mouse. If the driver fights Steam, put the tablet away. Missing a parry window because of a mapping overlay is worse than a wobbly Ice Spear. Keep the spell sigils sheet nearby so you remember which shape you are aiming at.
The Magus Circle is single-player. Nobody is coming to hold a pack while you finish a pentagram. Lose the left-side potions and you are already losing the close fight. First-hour setup lives on Getting Started. The loop between Tides lives on how to play.
A close-range loop you can practice
- Take Milk for the first close-range runs. Swap to Rum after you can finish a circle while strafing.
- Lock one poke (Ice Spear) and one shove (Riptide). Other glyphs are extras until those two land on the move.
- Start the stroke while you already have a walk direction. Do not plant, draw, then notice the claw.
- If you are Rum, spend mana into Spellblade on purpose. Look for crit and no-shatter text. Take a parry only if the card exists, then test it on trash.
- If you are Milk, collect Nimble near-misses between strokes. Pop Bunny Form to complete a line, not to travel.
- After a Leviathan, teleport on early runs. Currency in the Magus Mansion buys tarot and tea for the next attempt.
Demo runs often sat around 10–15 minutes if you extracted after a boss. One 30-minute recording met a Leviathan near 13 minutes in the World of Mirna. Close range at that timestamp is a drawing exam, not a damage rotation copied from another Magus.
Dates, and what this page will not do
Steam lists 24 September 2026 for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The demo (app 4289390) opened on 23 February 2026. Festival recap: Next Fest. Calendar: release date. Official URLs: Links.
This page will not invent a Pathfinder Magus rotation, a dual-wield staff, or a second mage on the couch. It will not treat the official melee short as a promise that every Circle member swings a sword. Close-range play in The Magus Circle is a mouse gesture under a hitbox. Draw it, slip it, draw it again. That is the melee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How do spellcasters use melee in The Magus Circle?
They keep drawing at close range. There is no hotbar auto-swing. Rum's Spellblade is the published melee-adjacent kit; Ice Spear pokes and Riptide shoves. See Rum and the spell tier list.
Is this Pathfinder Magus Spellstrike?
No. The Magus Circle is a different game. Combat is sigil drawing, not a tabletop Spellstrike action. Practice shapes on how to draw spells.
Who is the melee mage?
Should I use Ice Spear or Riptide up close?
Ice Spear for poke on the strongest target. Riptide to shove and buy a drawing window. Boss positioning is on how to beat bosses.
Do I need a drawing tablet for melee range?
No. A mouse is enough and crude sigils still count. Tablet notes live on how to draw spells and the spell sigils sheet.
Is melee casting single-player, and when does Steam list the game?
The whole game is single-player. Steam lists 24 September 2026. The demo opened on 23 February 2026. Calendar: release date.
