The Magus Circle Mages
Six playable kits, mansion NPCs, and which face to take into the Tide first.
The Magus Circle is a single-player survival roguelite. You do not bring a party. You pick one mage, draw their sigils, and send them into the Tide. By Witchlight has shown six playable characters with unique passives, upgrades, and story beats between runs. This hub is the roster map: who is documented, who is still a silhouette, and where to read a full kit.
Steam lists the full game for 24 September 2026. Everything here is preview material from the Steam Next Fest demo that opened on 23 February 2026, official shorts, and store screenshots (one character-select shot is labeled 0.4.6). Kits can change before launch. Treat the character tier list as a demo opinion, not a live ladder.
If you have not drawn a circle yet, start on Getting Started and how to draw spells. Come back here when the select screen is staring at you.
The six names on the select screen
A character-select screenshot lists, top to bottom:
- Milk — bunny-ear witch. Full kit published in-game: Nimble and Bunny Form.
- Matcha — green hair, glasses, antlers. Tea-room hub identity. Official short titled Meet Matcha.
- Coffee — green-skinned, sun-emblem robes. Also speaks in a mansion scene about tools and a cauldron that is not a cauldron.
- Chicha — listed with a green-gold sprite. No full combat passive has been published in the same detail as Milk.
- Rum — Magus General. Spellblade, crits, parry, prestige spells.
- Anchan — blue horned caster. The same screenshot shows a lock and 25 currency. A combat shot of a similar blue horned mage drawing a purple circle is almost certainly this kit in the field.
Deep pages now exist for all six: Milk, Matcha, Coffee, Chicha, Rum, and Anchan. Coffee, Chicha, and Anchan still have thinner public tooltips than Milk. The pages say so instead of inventing numbers.
Who to take first
- Milk if you miss drawings and need a near-miss refund. Nimble pays speed and mana when you slip a monster. Bunny Form is a 3-second shrink-and-sprint on a 25-second cooldown. Most first-hour players should start here.
- Rum if you want to stand in the mess and stack Spellblade. Official designer talk compared the signature to glintblade / homing soulmass. Crit upgrades and a parry option make Rum a high-attention pick, not a lazy one.
- Matcha if the mansion already hooked you and you want the tea-room mage in the Tide. Do not invent a passive we have not seen; learn the kit in-run and report back after a death.
- Coffee / Chicha / Anchan after you can finish sigils under pressure. Anchan’s 25-currency lock is a demo-era price, not a launch promise.
Pair the pick with the spell tier list and upgrade tier list. A mage is only as good as the hand the run deals you.
Mansion faces that are not on the six-list
Between runs you walk the Magus Mansion. Story progress happens here. Two faces matter even when they are not your loadout:
- Odds — fedora, bottle wall, gems, a wager speech. This is a bartender-bookie, not a seventh playable mage. Screenshot dialogue: “Listen missy, I got a wager in need of levying and you got stakes in need of stakin’… if I’m not mistaken.”
- Curio — named in the studio’s Next Fest thank-you as a source of “more sass.” Treat Curio as a hub personality the team wants to expand, not as a kit page.
Familiars, tea, and tarot live in the same building. The Empress card showed Upright +10% Speed and Reversed +10% Mana Efficiency. The Magus card listed Bunny Form. Full tarot notes sit on how to play and the upgrades page.
How unlocks looked in the demo
The select screen used a simple left-rail of portraits. Milk, Matcha, Coffee, Chicha, and Rum were selectable in that shot. Anchan sat behind a 25-cost lock. Currency in the corner was a purple droplet. Do not assume the 24 September 2026 build keeps the same price or the same order.
Story is not a skippable splash. By Witchlight’s store copy says you get to know the mages of the Circle and progress a narrative between each run. Coffee’s mansion line about tools is the tone: dry, slightly disappointed, still handing you a kit.
Build habits that transfer across mages
- One reliable sigil before a second spell. Drawing is the class fantasy; a dead mage with four half-drawn glyphs is still dead. See spell sigils.
- Near-miss spacing is a Milk specialty but a universal survival skill. The Tide does not pause while you finish a pentagram.
- After a win you pick challenges. There are more than ten unique options. Harder modifiers should wait until you can draw Ice Spear while strafing.
- Leviathan fights punish standing still. How to beat bosses is mage-agnostic.
- Death returns you to the mansion. Spend currency on tarot or tea before you reroll the same mistake.

This hub will grow when By Witchlight prints the missing passives. Until then, do not fill Chicha with fan-wiki guesses. Play the six, draw badly on purpose, and keep the ones that still kill the Tide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
How many playable mages are in The Magus Circle?
Who should I pick first?
Milk for near-miss speed and Bunny Form. Rum if you want Spellblade crits. See the character tier list after one demo-era run.
Is Odds a playable mage?
No. Odds is a Magus Mansion bartender-bookie with wagers. Playable names are the six on the select screen.
Why is Anchan locked?
A 0.4.6 select screenshot showed Anchan behind 25 currency. That is a demo-era price, not a launch promise. Check the demo guide.
Is this a team game?
No. The Magus Circle is single-player. You pick one mage per run. Story conversations in the mansion are between-run flavor, not a second controller.
