The Magus Circle Next Fest Demo
What the February 2026 demo included, how it scored, where to find it on Steam, and what may change by 24 September 2026.
The Magus Circle demo is Steam app 4289390. It opened on 23 February 2026 during Steam Next Fest as a free slice of By Witchlight’s single-player survival roguelite. This page is a record of that slice: what players could do, how the reviews landed, how to find the listing, and what the studio said would grow before the full game Steam lists for 24 September 2026.
It is not a live server status board. Festival weeks end. If the install button is gone from your client, you still have this write-up, the Next Fest recap, and the wishlist for app 2796640. Price for the full game is not listed yet; Steam still shows coming soon.
How to find the demo on Steam
Search Steam for The Magus Circle Demo, or open the full game page for app 2796640 and look for the demo module. The dedicated demo app ID is 4289390. Platforms follow the full game: Windows, macOS, and Linux. Interface and subtitles in the wider project are English and Korean; some Next Fest players noted the demo build they tried was English-first. Confirm your machine against system requirements before you argue with the launcher.
If you have not wishlisted the full game, do that first. The wishlist checklist is the boring correct order: Steam ping, Discord, Patreon if you want dev diaries. Official channels also sit on Links and the By Witchlight site.
What the Next Fest build included
Studio copy and the demo page promised the fantasy the full game is selling: draw arcane sigils, stack upgrades, meet mages, walk the Magus Mansion, raise familiars, drink tea, and fight the Tide. You do not need to be an artist. Crude drawings still count. A drawing tablet is optional.
Concrete things players actually saw:
- Hand-drawn casting with potions on the left of the HUD, spell slots on the right, plus XP bonus, timer, kill count, and level. A screenshot showed version 0.4.6.
- A Magus Mansion hub between runs, with tarot, NPCs, and Odds as bartender-bookie taking wagers.
- Playable mages from the set of six. Milk carried Nimble and Bunny Form. Rum showed Spellblade, crits, and a parry upgrade. Matcha appears in mansion dialogue. Coffee, Chicha, and Anchan (locked at 25 currency in a screenshot) complete the named six on the players hub.
- Spells named in recordings: Ice Spear, Riptide (with later Quazar beam and Wattatsumi sea dragon upgrades), meteor swarm, chain lightning, magic missile, Spellblade.
- World of Mirna as a named map, Leviathan bosses, and the choice to teleport after a kill or keep pushing. Runs often sat around 10–15 minutes if you extracted. One 30-minute recording met the first Leviathan near 13 minutes.
- Over 10 unique challenges you pick after victories, 250+ unique upgrades in the design pitch, and about 20 unique spells after the studio grew the list from 12.
- Tarot cards on a screenshot: The Magus (Bunny Form), The Priestess (+0.5 Mana Regen), The Empress (Upright +10% Speed / Reversed +10% Mana Efficiency), The Emperor (+10% Duration T1), The Hierophant (+0.5 Mana Regen T1).
For how those systems connect, use how to play. For stroke practice, use how to draw spells. For Leviathans, use how to beat bosses. First-hour order is Getting Started.
Review score and the 21,000-player thank-you
Steam listed the demo at Very Positive, 163 reviews, about 98 percent. KevDev’s announcement put more than 21,000 Next Fest players inside the circle. The post thanked people for feedback and bug reports, joked about vanquishing Nivek the bug wizard, and pointed at Discord for bragging about broken runs. Patreon was offered for dev diaries, wallpapers, music, and a hint that another demo window might appear near the end of March.
That thank-you also previewed the full-game appetite: more characters, more maps, more spells, more upgrades, more hub-world activities, more sass from curio, and more mysteries. Read it as a direction of travel, not a patch note with dates.
People compared the feel to Vampire Survivors and the drawing to Lost Magic. Those comparisons showed up in tags and comments. They are compass needles. The Magus Circle remains a single-player bullet-hell roguelite with a mansion and a cursor.
What may change before 24 September 2026
Do not freeze 0.4.6 in your head as the launch client. Things already in motion:
- Spell count grew from 12 to about 20 during development. It can grow again. Keep spell sigils and the spell tier list as living pages, not scripture.
- Three maps with procedural generation were a stated goal. Demo players spent a lot of time on one world. Extra maps should change Leviathan pacing.
- Hub activities and familiars are on the feature list. Odds, tarot, and tea are the slice we can already describe.
- Unlock numbers such as Anchan at 25 currency can move. So can tarot values.
- Languages for the full listing are English and Korean. Demo language coverage may not have matched that yet.
- Performance and bugs were explicit Next Fest work items. A crash report involving lightning-storm plus frost nova at extreme kill counts is a reminder that stacked upgrades can still break a build.
- Price remains unlisted. Coming soon on Steam means do not write a fake discount.
The upgrade tier list and character tier list will look different if those promises land. Tier List as a hub is the place to check after a studio post, not a reason to ignore the demo you already played. Tools stays useful for specs and wishlist chores. Updates and the release date page catch calendar wording.
How to use leftover demo time
If the demo still installs for you, do not try to 100 percent a festival build. Run this instead:
- One Milk run that extracts after the first Leviathan, even if you could continue.
- One Rum run that tests whether you can parry without dropping the sigil.
- One mansion pass that buys a mana-regen tarot and talks to Odds without taking a reckless wager.
- Notes on which shapes the recognizer accepted. Dump those into your own copy of the spell sigils practice habit.
- Stop. Wishlist 2796640. Stretch the hand.
If the demo does not install, watch a recording, read the Guides Hub, and treat February as history. The Tide planned for 24 September 2026 is the thing the wishlist is for.
